Urban Maori win prisoner rehab contract
The National Urban Maori Authority is one of five providers chosen to run a new prisoner reintegration service.
Corrections Minister Anne Tolley says the $10 million Out of Gate service will provide assistance to prisoners before, and immediately after they leave prison.
That’s when they are at most at risk of reoffending as they try to readjust to life on the outside.
She says the providers will support up to 4000 prisoners, serving sentences of less than two years.
They will help them access employment, accommodation, education and training, and social services.
NUMA has responsibility for prisoners from Ngawha, Paremoremo, Mount Eden and Spring Hill.
The other providers are Presbyterian Support Northern which will look after women prisoner, Goodwood Park Healthcare Group which services Waikeria and Rangipo prisons, Care NZ which does the South Island prisons and Healthcare of New Zealand Limited doing the lower North Island.
