Church land going back to Tauranga hapu

Land taken from Maori in Tauranga Moana to fund their conversion to Christianity should soon be back with the iwi.
Waiariki MP Te Ururoa Flavell has a private bill to amend the New Zealand Mission Trust, which still holds about 8 hectares of central Tauranga.
That’s what’s left of the land acquired by the Church Mission Society in 1838, and put into a trust for the purposes of evangelism.
The bill transfers the land to a new organisation, the Otamataha Trust, which is run by members of Ngati Tapu and Ngaitamarawaho hapu.
The bill was given its first reading yesterday and referred to the Maori Affairs Committee.
