Youth role for Louisa Wall
Labour’s new youth affairs spokesperson says it’s a job tailor-made for her and her electorate.
Manurewa MP Louisa Wall picked up the job and the number 16 slot in David Cunliffe’s shadow cabinet.
The new Labour leader installed leadership rival Shane Jones in the fifth seat on the front bench with responsibility for Maori affairs and economic development, and Nanaia Mahuta comes in at number nine with Maori development and treaty negotiations.
Ms Wall says 60 percent of her electorate is under 25, and she is well aware of the challenge of motivating young people to engage with school, work or even to register to vote.
"About 25 percent of our young people aren't even in the game to have their say on election day. It's one of the areas where I have been working with some of our youth leaders. I know the Manurewa Youth Council have (increasing enrolment) as an objective. Every opportunity that I have I talk to our rangatahi about politics and the need for them to be enrolled and have their say," she says.
Ms Wall also picked up an associate role a spokesperson on south Auckland issues, so she’s looking forward to engaging with community and local body leaders on that.
