Parata cherry picks education programmes
Education Minister Hekia Parata says a $27 million boost in funding for programmes that target priority children is an acknowledgement that one size does not fit all.
The funding includes $8 million over four years to relaunch the Ka Hikitia Māori education strategy, which the Audit Office said was a good programme that had been poorly implemented.
There’s also $5 million for Building On Success, which takes elements from programmes like He Kakano, Starpath, and Te Kotahitanga, which offers help to teachers on how to manage their Māori students.
"That programme has been successful for some but not all so we have looked at that and said 'what elements really work and how do we use those?' Kotahitanga was focused on less than 50 schools. This programme, building on Success, we expect that there will be 100 schools at any one time on the programme and that we will work with the particular school, with their particular circumstances, to come up with the solutions for them," Ms Parata says.
