New Zealanders may soon have a choice on whether they use the English or the Māori names for the North and South Islands.
The New Zealand Geographic Board will recommend to the Minister for Land Information that dual names be adopted.
Chairperson Don Grant says the overwhelming majority of public submitters wanted the choice to use either the English or Māori names.
The North Island will also be known as Te Ika-ā-Maui, and the South Island Te Waipounamu.
