Marae DIY volunteering in action

It’s National Volunteer Week, and for many Māori, that means contributing to their local community, marae or whānau activity.
Ngarangi Walker, a volunteer on Māori Television’s Marae DIY, says the week’s theme, ‘He Tangata, He Tangata, He Tangata’ captures what Māori are doing every week making their communities work.
She says people are looking for a chance to serve and to invest their skills or labour in whānau power, and Marae DIY captures the effort and the rewards.
"It’s about us trying to engage not only at a home level but for people who live away from their turangawaewae or ahi kaa. It's about being able to say 'I helped do that.' Not all of us are going to be the marae chairman or the marae committee member so DIY is a great way for us to return home and do some mahi at the pā," Ms Walker says.
