Public want action on Horowhenua clean-up
An iwi working party established to restore the health of Lake Horowhenua and the Hokio Stream is seeking a meeting with the lake trustees to establish common goals.
Cleaning up what is one of the country’s most polluted waterways has been hampered by continued dumping of storm water by local bodies and the illegal occupation of lakeside buildings by boating clubs.
A public meeting on Sunday endorsed the work being done by Muaupoko and Raukawa on the issue.
The working party was asked to prepare an action plan and to revive attempts to create an accord between all stakeholders, including iwi and councils.
While the title to the lake is owned by a trust representing Muaupoko, control is with a domain board dominated by local government.
