Court intervenes in Horowhenua battle
The Māori Land Court has stopped the Lake Horowhenua Trust Board destroying the home of the lake’s guardian.
Judge Michael Doogan ordered the trustees to stay out of the former lakeside nursery occupied by Philip Taueki.
He ruled there was no immediate safety need to remove the buildings, and he asked for more information on the trust’s decision to do so.
The court heard that trust chair, Eugene Henare, had made two visits to the building over Easter weekend during which he damaged a wall and destroyed a power board.
Mr Henare says these were preliminary assessments of the work needed to remove the buildings.
Mr Taueki has lived in the property for 10 years while he has fought to get the polluted waterway cleaned up.
