Tāonga puoro shared at indigenous festival
Taihape based Hui-A has been invited to perform their taonga-puoro based music at the indigenous Message Sticks Festival in the Sydney Opera House later next month.
Taonga puoro player Jerome Kavanagh says the invitation came as a result of festival director Rhoda Roberts seeing the duo perform last year at the Pacific Arts Festival in the Solomon Islands.
For the Sydney performance, Kavanagh and guitarist Paulie Ngarimu will be joined by bass player Janice O'Brien.
This year's Message Sticks will mark the 200th anniversary of the death of Woollarawarre Bennelong, who served as a mediator between Aboriginal Australians and British settlers.
