Turia praised for national influence
Māori Party president Pem Bird has praised party co-leader Tariana Turia as one of the most influential New Zealand leaders of her generation.
The Te Tai Hauauru MP today announced she would not be standing in the 2014 election.
Mr Bird says Mrs Turia’s courage and determination inspired a whole new movement that is continuing to change the political landscape.
Mr Bird warned officials and politicians from other parties not to relax at the news, because the Minister for Whānau Ora is likely to speed up rather than slow down over the next two years because she knows how much remains to be done.
