Hundertwasser gallery will show Maori art to world
A Ngāpuhi artist is looking forward to greater international exposure through a new gallery in Whangarei.
Lisa Reihana is one of eight artists, academics and kaumatua on the Māori advisory panel for the Hundertwasser Art Centre, which is to be built at the Whangarei Town basin to plans drawn up by the late artist.
She says Friedensreich Hundertwasser, who had homes in his native Austria and near Kawakawa, specified a Māori gallery alongside the galleries showing his work and that of other New Zealand artists.
It's really exciting for me as a person of Ngapuhi descent, having an opportunity to support something I think will be very helpful for us and our opportunities to show our creativity and our work to the world, because the world will come and visit this gallery," Reihana says.
If the money can be raised from council and other sources the $13 million centre could be open by 2015.
