Ngā Potiki hopes for restoration of foreshore
Tauranga’s Ngā Potiki hopes the repeal of a 1975 law grabbing foreshore and seabed land for sewage treatment ponds will improve relations with the Tauranga council.
The Mount Maunganui Borough Reclamation and Empowering Act Repeal Bill was read for a third time last week.
Ngā Potiki chair Colin Reeder says the hapu protested the taking of 75 hectares for oxidation ponds, their close proximity to the Pāpāmoa coast and an ancient urupā.
He says the repeal vindicates the protests of his grandparents’ generation.
“It also reflects a new relationship we have with Tauranga City Council. The relationship in the past hasn’t been that great. The passing of the repeal came about as the result of a joint application between the council and Ngā Potiki to repeal the act and put things back to how they were in the 1970s, as much as possible,” Mr Reeder says.
