Brown to try Thursday to reverse anti-Maori vote

Auckland mayor Len Brown will try to bring the Independent Maori Statutory Board back into the budget process at Thursday's meeting.
At last Thursday's meeting the council voted 11-10 for the full council to work on the annual plan, rather than send it to the strategy and finance committee.
Mr Brown says he should not have let the motion through, and some of the councillors didn't understand what they were voting for.
“What I am proposing is to assert the proper delegations and make sure that it is felt in the strategic finance and therefore the two members of the Independent Maori Statutory Board, we’ve done over the last two years and will be a part of the consideration, quite frankly a little bit of fun and games and one or two people taking their eye off the ball”
Len Brown says there are issues the Independent Maori Statutory Board needs input on, such as whether any of the council's $1.5 billion capital spends will go towards marae, and also joint developments with post-settlement iwi.
