Bones and artefacts have been uncovered by erosion of a coastal bank at Normanby Beach near Timaru.
Tewera King from the Arowhenua runanga says the bones will be examined to see if they belonged to a human or a moa.
There was also what appeared to be a small axe blade, cooking stones and the tooth of a killer whale.
Mr King says the runanga is keen for the items to be returned to the runanga after they have been examined by archaeologists.
