Tuhoe deal will trigger top-ups
Treaty Negotiations Minister Chris Finlayson has confirmed the Tuhoe deal will push total settlements over a billion dollars in 1994 dollars – triggering top up payments to Tainui and Ngai Tahu.
Mr Finlayson says the Crown was within $30 million of the threshold.
Under the terms negotiated in the 1990s, the first two iwi to do major settlements would each get about 17 percent of the total.
The relativities will be recalculated every five years until the historic claims settlement process is completed.
