Knives out for Matariki food fest
Some of Aotearoa’s top Māori chefs are heading for Taupo in June to present their best dishes at a Matariki feast – Tohunga Tūmau.
Taupo District councillor Danny Loughlin from Ngāti Tūwharetoa the culinary standard was set at last year’s hugely successful event in Otautahi.
The aim is to celebrate world-class Māori food by bringing together chefs like Joe Mcleod, Rewi Spraggon, Peter Gordon and Nancy Pirini.
“It also brings a lot of our Māori tikanga and kawa, and just a whole lot of beautiful kaupapa into this food space, in celebrating kai,” he says.
Danny Loughlin says much of the food is also sourced from Maori businesses – with the idea of creating multiple economic opportunities for those involved.
