Veteran commentator Ken Laban sayd the Māori All Blacks’ 36-10 win over a Japanese XV in Tokyo on Saturday could point the way to new income streams for the game here.
He says New Zealand Rugby relies on overseas sponsorships, a share of broadcast rights and now hedge fund finance
With the All Blacks’ test schedule largely full, there could be opportunities to cash in on the huge overseas popularity of the Maori All Blacks, especially in some of the smaller rugby nations.
“China, india and the USA – huge populations, huge markets and still not a lot of traction from a rugby union perspective. The Maori All Blacks, if they were creative with some of their selections, what they could do for the game is limited by your imagination,” Laban says.
He says Rugby League has shown the way with its promotion of Indigenous match-ups.
