The Public Service Association says job cuts are unravelling the fabric of New Zealanders’ social security system.
The Government yesterday confirmed 419 roles will go from Oranga Tamariki, 300 from the Accident Compensation Corporation and a further 86 from the Ministry of Social Development, bringing total roles cut at MSD to around 700.
PSA assistant secretary Fleur Fitzsimons says it means children, young people, workers, those who are injured and others will find they will no longer get the support they need.
She says the three agencies are the pillars of New Zealand’s social security system, and it’s a dark day for the social safety net which was once the admired the world over.
