Parties in in micro-tax bidding war
National deputy leader Nicola Willis says National’s tax cuts will deliver more than Labour’s GST off fresh and frozen fruit and vegetables.
The party has not spelt out the details of its policy yet, but Ms Willis says people smashed by rises in the cost of living are desperate for relief.
She says in the best case Labour’s plan will only save them $4 or $5 a week.
“What we want to do is offer income tax reductions and that will mean people get more in their weekly pay or more in their fortnightly pay and it will be more than $5 in most cases and the best thing about that approach is we’re not relying on the local Pak’n’Save or New World or Countdown to pass on the savings. It will go direct to you,” she says.
Announcing Labour’s policy yesterday, leader Chris Hipkins also promised an increase next April of $25 a week in the Working for Families payment, which he said would put more into the pockets of those who need it most than National’s tax cuts.
