Peters upset at boot camp policy steal
New Zealand First leader, Winston Peters, says military-style boot camps for young offenders can work if run correctly, – but National’s plan to bring them back is just about vote-catching.
He says defence force careers have produced thousands of exceptional Māori achievers – because Māori thrive with good direction, order and training.
But National’s leader Chris Luxon is offering a knee-jerk reaction to the public outcry over ram raids.
“If you look at things positively and its run correctly, then it will work. But my fear is it’s a tokenistic sort of statement, put out to try and demonstrate that you’re for law and order,” Mr Peters says.
He says to work properly all factors must be taken into account and addressed – such as truancy and dysfunctional home environments.
