Tourism gets $54 million to test new ideas
The chair of New Zealand Māori Tourism is welcoming a $54 million fund to support transformation of the tourism sector.
The fund will support projects that reduce carbon emissions resulting from tourism, enhance the natural environment or biodiversity. lift productivity through technology, or promote and protect taonga Māori throughout the Aotearoa visitor journey.
Dale Stephens says it’s designed to get tourism moving in the direction Maori tourism has been heading for some time.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for all our tourism operators to look carefully at what we’re currently doing, how we could do it better or what we could do that’s new, bring that new offering forward, apply for the funding, get support from Maori Tourism to make sure we tick all those boxes and we really enhance and grow our sector,” he says.
Maori Tourism has already created a new regenerative tourism role to help operators come up with ideas to grow tourism in their rohe.
