Five wahine intend to bring the laughs from wharekai to the Auckland comedy stage this weekend.
SHOES OFF (AT THE DOOR) at the Basement Theatre is a stand up comedy show featuring Courtney Dawson, Kura Turuwhenua, Chardé Heremaia, Aunty Lianne and Janaye Henry.
Henry says it’s great to be on stage together supporting each other as a collective.
Her part is mostly unscripted, much like the kōrero from wahine in the wharekai.
“When I started comedy, I would just rock up and talk and I think that’s the main thing. It’s not like in the marae, the aunties are practising and writing their stories that they’re telling that are making you cry-laugh, they have just lived it and it is funny so I think there is so much space for that kind of thing in comedy too,” Henry says.
SHOES OFF (AT THE DOOR) have two more shows tonight and Saturday night.
