Maara kai best check for inflation
The chair of the South Island Whānau Ora Commissioning Agency Te Pūtahitanga is advising whānau to grow their own food as a response to the rising cost of living.
Tā Mark Solomon says people who tout Māori ownership of supermarkets as a way to get food costs down are on the wrong track.
Home-grown kai is a better way to reduce the food bill.
“It’s something my grandparents did, the generation before. It’s not something my generation has done nor do my children, but in these times with costs going through the roof, we’ve got the means on our own land to grow food,” he says.
Tā Mark says broccoli is costing up to $15 in some Christchurch supermarkets.
