The New Zealand Defence Force has for the first time appointed a woman as its Māori cultural advisor.
Kathleen Nikau, who has Waikato and Ngāpuhi connection, has been with the Air Force for 33 years.
She will replace Navy Lieutenant Haki Rudolph at the end of the year.
As kai tohutohu Māori Warrant Officer Nikau will advise the Chief of Defence on cultural issues, relationships and obligations under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
