Te Matau ā Maui back at home base
Ngāti Kahungunu is today welcoming home a voyager from the far reaches of Te Moananui ā Kiwa
Te Matau ā Maui was one of a fleet of seven double-hulled waka hourua that sailed from New Zealand to the west coast of America to raise awareness of the health of the ocean environment.
Its permanent home is to be Ahuriri.
Jenny Mauger, the chair of Ngāti Kahungunu’s waka hourua committee, says Te Matau ā Maui is also the Māori name for Hawke's Bay, so it’s fitting the vessel returns there.
She says ideas for the waka include using it to teach young people sailing skills and traditional celestial navigation, and it will be available for further ocean voyages.
