Green’s support for housing hikoi
Green's co-leader Metiria Turei is welcoming today's hikoi to parliament to protest the government's housing policies.
The hikoi has attracted people from around the country whose communities have been affected by Housing New Zealand pulling down state houses to free up land for private developers.
It will present a petition to MPs asking for a major state-house building and renovation programme, as well as a reversal of new Housing New Zealand criteria that means only families with the most complex needs can qualify for assistance.
Ms Turei says past governments have neglected housing, and while the last-Labour led did build more state houses, it also failed to stem a price bubble that made housing unaffordable for many families.
"I think there is still a huge amount of work that needs to be done and it's good for people to protest about it, making sure every citizen has a decent place to live seems like a really important thing to be angry about," she says.
