Treaty bills moved through parliament
Parliament held a special sitting today to make progress on four historical treaty settlements.
The Waitaha Claims Settlement Bill and Ngati Whatua o Kaipara Claims Settlement Bill passed their first readings unanimously and were referred to the Maori Affairs Select Committee.
The Ngati Manuhiri Claims Settlement Bill and Ngati Whatua Orakei Claims Settlement Bill passed their second readings.
Treaty Negotiations Minister Chris Finlayson says the broad cross-party support for the bills recognises the importance of settling genuine historical Treaty grievances in a full and final fashion.
