Diabetes-heart link study funded
The Auckland Medical Research Foundation is funding a study that looks into the links between diabetes and heart disease.
The $159,000 grant to Dr Kimberley Mellor and professors Margart Brimble and Lea Delbridge at Auckland University’s department of physiology is one of $1.3 million in grants handed out so far this year.
The researchers say more than 200,000 people in New Zealand are currently diagnosed with diabetes and the burden falls disproportionately on the Maori and Pacific Island populations, but the links with heart disease are poorly understood.
They hope their research will lead to effective treatment strategies.
