Tairawhiti marae join waste scheme
Four marae in Ruatoria and Te Araroa will be working to cut their rubbish output.
They’ve been chosen for a pilot Para Kore Zero Waste on Marae programme, funded by Gisborne District Council’s waste minimisation programme, which comes from a from a levy placed on all waste that goes to landfill.
It’s seen as a pilot for other East Coast marae.
Para Kore helps marae communities to identify ways to reduce, reuse, recycle, and compost.
It’s working with 50 marae across the country who are diverting between 50 percent and 85 percent of their waste from landfill.
What happens on the marae affects what happens in homes, workplaces and communities and helps normalise waste minimisation behaviours as standard, everyday practice.
