School test will be in detail
Labour’s Maori affairs spokesperson says National’s new education initiative is a slogan rather than a solution to educational under-achievement.
John Key has announced $359 million in funding for new types of principals and expert teachers, allowing more interventions in poorly-performing schools.
The details of how the scheme will operate are to be worked out by the education secretary and sector groups.
Mr Jones says that detail will create divisiveness in the sector.
"The test will be who defines who is a super-duper principal. Who defines the basis on which they can exercise some sort of sovereignty over another school when that school itself is probably partly suffering because of an absence of resources from the government, and a lot of the parents they need help and we have decided to come in at the household level and address the concerns of those parents and their kids before they even get to school'" he says.
