Poverty rise has long term consequences
Labour MP Louisa Wall says the Commissioner for Children’s Child Poverty Monitor should be a call for action.
She says philanthropy is being used as a substitute for sound policy, but the cracks are showing all over.
In her Manurewa electorate school principles are begging for food or soap so their pupils can have access to basic needs.
The Children’s Commissioner has found the proportion of children living in poverty has risen from about 15 percent 30 years ago to 29 percent, with Maori and Pasifika children far more likely than their peers to be doing it tough.
