Tapac season for haka theatre pioneers
A company which brings together kapa haka, dance and theatre into a theatrical experience is to hold a festival of short pieces in Auckland next month.
Directors Kura & Beez Te Waati says the Taketake festival will include a new work He Kakano that tries to sum up Hawaiki TU’s aim to develop new and authentic Maori performances that reflect the spirit of Aotearoa.
They say the multi-disciplinary haka theatre format allows artists to share stories steeped in Maori mythology but presented with theatrical technology, film and innovative special effects.
The festival caps a year in which Hawaiki TU has developed new work as well as touring its signature work Te Manawa.
The company is set to make its first overseas tour next year.
Taketake is at TAPAC, the Auckland Performing Arts Centre at Western Springs, from October 11 to 13.
