Ngapuhi artists show their range
Emerging artists and experienced exhibitors will share the walls at Toi Ngapuhi, an exhibition in Whangarei as part of this month’s Ngapuhi Festival.
Lead curator Rhonda Halliday says the more than 80 contributors were asked to submit works on the theme "Ko au te wai, ko te wai ko au – I am the water, and the water is me".
New faces include painter Leonard Murupaenga, who was selected for one of three Maori internships offered in 2017 by Toi Maori Aotearoa in partnership with Creative Northland, and Te Aroha Te Paa, who has worked alongside established Far North artists Ross Gregory and Don Jack.
The strength of Tai Tokerau in uku or clay work will be on display in the work of Dorothy Waetford, Rhonda Halliday, Noelle Jakeman, Hera Johns and Davina Duke.
Other high profile artists include silversmith Alex Nathan, contemporary painter Andrea Hopkins, painter and teacher Theresa Reihana, Victor Te Paa and carver and sculptor Will Ngakuru.
Ms Halliday says many artists cross over between traditional and contemporary and craft their work in diverse mediums such as uku, paint, print, fibre, glass, bone, silver, harakeke, pounamu, stone, and wood.
Toi Ngapuhi is at Toll Stadium from January 25 to 28.
