Government contracts could boost Māori purses
The chief operating officer of Ngāti Paoa Group Holdings is off to the United States and Canada to study how targeted procurement policies could inform and support Māori economic empowerment.
Martin Enright is one of 12 winners of a 2019 Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellowship.
Ngāti Paoa has ambitious development plans, including the option to develop housing at Point England, and it is also looking at whether iwi-owned businesses can get service contracts from central and local government.
North American governments run a range of programmes in which contractors must have minority or indigenous credentials.
Other fellowships cover a diverse range of topics including programmes for people living with dementia, engaging children in science programmes, animal welfare best practice, and heritage building archaeology practice.
