Waititi inspires with Oscar acceptance speech

Taika Waititi's Oscar win has been hailed as a victory for indigenous people around the world.
Waititi's screenplay for his film Jojo Rabbit, based on the novel Caging Skies by Belgian-New Zealander Christine Leunens, beat out Two Popes by fellow New Zealander Anthony McCarten as well as blockbuster heavyweights The Irishman and Joker.
Ngā Aho Whakaari chair Hineani Melbourne says the way he used his acceptance speech to dedicate his first Oscar to fellow "indigenous kids" around the world will inspire budding Taika's everywhere.
"We never know who the next Taika Waititi going to be. There's bound to be at least one but probably more because the thing is, once you start these kinds of things it picks up momentum. I can just us as Maori filmmakers or Maori drama people going from strength to strength. Really exciting stuff for us," she says.
