Twin Harbour Bridge flags would send partnership message
An Auckland councillor is calling for the tino rangatiratanga flag to be a permanent fixture on the Harbour Bridge.
Chris Darby, who represents the North Shore ward, says the red, white and black banner should be given equal standing alongside the New Zealand flag.
He says council is pushing to incorporate Māoridom into the design and feel of the city, and flying both flags is the next step towards true partnership for the nation's biggest city.
"People have woken up in Auckland to the importance of partnership and not just in a small token way or a small gesture, it's got to be deep and meaningful," Mr Darby says.
He says flying the Māori flag alongside the New Zealand flag only on Waitangi Day feels tokenistic.
