WNEWS 10.12: Maori reporting in English shines at Kupu Ora Awards
One of the judges of today’s Massey University Nga Kupu Ora Maori Journalism and Broadcasting Awards says it’s a testament to the quality of Maori reporting done in English â despite a lack of official funding.
Hineani Melbourne from Nga Aho Whakaaro says all judges were impressed with the standard of entries, and people should be proud of the way Maori journalists work to reflect Maori events and aspirations.
Maori broadcast funding agency Te Mangai Paho has refused to fund news and current affairs in Maori, which she says is disappointing.
"The truth be told 80 percent of our people do not speak Maori, unfortunately, and while we continue to try to get more people involved in our language we still need to cater for our people whop don’t speak Maori, and also reflect their world, our world," Ms Melbourne says.
She says there is also an increasing audience of non-Maori who want to hear current affairs from a Maori perspective.
