After 25 years supporting small businesses, Māori enterprise, aspiring entrepreneurs and mentors across Aotearoa, Colin Bass is being recognised for one of the most significant individual contributions to New Zealand’s SME sector.

The Nelson-based Business Mentors New Zealand stalwart will receive the organisation’s prestigious Pin of Recognition from Minister for Small Business and Manufacturing Cameron Brewer in Wellington this Thursday.

Bass has worked across a wide range of settings, from marae to the digital and AI frontier, from Corrections initiatives to the back rooms of small business owners navigating the daily pressures of keeping their enterprises alive.

Business Mentors New Zealand says his contribution has been defined by commitment, optimism and a willingness to step into any project that needed support.

Over the past quarter century, Bass has helped train hundreds of mentors throughout the country, supporting them into active voluntary mentoring roles for small and medium-sized businesses.

One of his major achievements has been the establishment of marae-based mentoring, helping create stronger connections between experienced business leaders and Māori enterprise.

His work with Corrections has also helped build pathways for aspiring entrepreneurs, supporting people to develop business skills and confidence as part of wider reintegration and opportunity-building efforts.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Bass helped develop digital solutions that connected SME owners with mentors at a time when many businesses were facing serious uncertainty and disruption.

More recently, he has helped lead the development and implementation of AI tools for Business Mentors New Zealand, including the BMNZ Mentoring Assistant and Digital Mentor platforms.

Alongside his national work, Bass has continued to volunteer his own time to support SME businesses in the Nelson and Tasman region.

Those who have worked with him describe a mentor and facilitator who brings energy, patience and practical support to business owners dealing with the stress and isolation that can come with running an enterprise.

His recognition reflects not only the scale of his service, but also the breadth of communities he has supported, including Māori businesses, regional entrepreneurs, people seeking second chances, and small business owners adapting to rapid technological change.

The Pin of Recognition acknowledges a career spent strengthening New Zealand’s business mentoring network and helping ensure small business owners have access to trusted guidance when they need it most.

For many SMEs across Aotearoa, Colin Bass’s legacy is measured in the confidence, resilience and opportunities created through years of quiet, consistent service.
