Meridian Energy has secured final approval from the Environment Court to continue operating the Waitaki Power Scheme for another 35 years, providing long-term certainty for one of Aotearoa’s most important electricity generation assets.

The court’s decision allows Meridian to maintain the scheme’s current storage levels, operating conditions and generation capacity, safeguarding a key component of New Zealand’s renewable energy network.

The Waitaki Power Scheme is the country’s largest and most flexible hydroelectricity system, comprising six power stations with a combined installed capacity of 1,553 megawatts. The scheme accounts for almost 30 percent of New Zealand’s installed hydro generation capacity and plays a critical role in supporting the national electricity system and wider economy.

The approval removes uncertainty around the future operation of the scheme and opens the door for Meridian to investigate opportunities to expand hydro storage and generation capacity within the Waitaki catchment.

As part of the new consent conditions, Meridian will implement enhanced indigenous biodiversity management initiatives across the catchment in partnership with the Department of Conservation.

The decision is expected to strengthen confidence in New Zealand’s renewable energy sector as the country works toward increasing electrification and reducing carbon emissions while maintaining a reliable electricity supply.
