Dargaville residents will soon have greater access to urgent healthcare and cancer treatment services without having to travel long distances, with new acute care and community-based cancer services being rolled out in the Northland town.
Health Minister Simeon Brown announced the expansion as part of the Government’s wider effort to improve healthcare access for rural and regional communities. The new services are expected to reduce travel times for patients and their whānau while easing pressure on larger hospitals in Whangārei and Auckland.
The development includes enhanced acute care services designed to provide faster assessment and treatment closer to home, alongside the introduction of cancer infusion services that will allow patients to receive treatment in Dargaville rather than travelling to major centres.
The move is particularly significant for people living in the Kaipara district and surrounding rural communities, many of whom currently face lengthy journeys for specialist appointments and cancer treatment.
The new cancer treatment capability forms part of a nationwide expansion of community infusion services aimed at supporting growing demand for cancer care following increased investment in new medicines and treatments. Dargaville has been identified as one of 14 locations across the country set to receive new infusion facilities through to 2028.
Government figures show around 13,000 additional cancer infusions are expected to be delivered nationally during the 2025-26 year, representing a significant increase in demand for treatment services. The expanded network is expected to allow more patients to access care within their own communities.
The announcement is being welcomed as an important step for Northland, where rural communities often face barriers to healthcare due to distance, transport costs and workforce shortages.
Health officials say providing treatment closer to home can improve patient wellbeing by reducing travel stress and allowing people to spend more time with their whānau while undergoing treatment.
The Dargaville expansion is part of broader efforts to strengthen healthcare services across Te Tai Tokerau, including increased cancer treatment capacity in Kaitaia, Whangārei and the Bay of Islands.
