Te Pāti Māori has made one of the most unusual strategic moves of Election 2026, unveiling a one-person party list as it puts its focus firmly on winning the seven Māori electorates.

The party announced on Sunday that general secretary Lance Norman would be its sole additional list candidate, reaffirming a campaign strategy centred on securing candidate votes across the Māori seats.

Te Pāti Māori has been signalling the strategy since August, encouraging supporters to give their electorate vote to its candidates while directing their party vote toward either Labour or the Greens. The party says the approach is designed to maximise Māori representation across Parliament rather than build a longer Te Pāti Māori list.

The strategy comes as contests across the Māori electorates intensify. Recent electorate polling has shown different pictures around the motu, including Te Pāti Māori co-leader Debbie Ngarewa-Packer on 38 percent in Te Tai Hauāuru, compared with Labour’s Te Pūoho Kātene on 27 percent, while 18 percent remained undecided.

In Te Tai Tonga, meanwhile, a late-September Whakaata Māori-Curia poll had Labour’s Mananui Ramsden on 30 percent, Te Pāti Māori candidate Lisa Marie Murch on 17 percent, Green candidate Lisa Te Morenga on 16 percent and independent Tākuta Ferris on 15 percent.

The one-person list places considerable weight on electorate contests and split voting as Te Pāti Māori seeks to shape Māori representation in the next Parliament.

John Tamihere joined Ata Tū to discuss the thinking behind the strategy, how the party sees the campaign developing across the Māori electorates, and what it is concentrating on during the final weeks before election day.
