Tributes are flowing from across New Zealand’s political spectrum following the death of former Speaker of the House and Labour MP Rt Hon Adrian Paki Rurawhe.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon remembered Rurawhe as a respected former Speaker whose calm and fair approach earned respect across Parliament, while acknowledging his contribution to his community and New Zealand.
Labour leader Chris Hipkins paid tribute to Rurawhe as a rangatira deeply committed to his whānau, iwi, the Rātana movement and public service. Te Pāti Māori also acknowledged his lifetime of service and leadership, describing his passing as a significant loss for te ao Māori and Aotearoa.
Speaker Gerry Brownlee recognised Rurawhe’s contribution to Parliament, where he served as Speaker of the House from 2022 until 2023, following years representing Te Tai Hauāuru and later serving as a Labour list MP.
New Zealand First leader Winston Peters also joined the tributes, reflecting the respect Rurawhe commanded across political divides.
Rurawhe stepped down from Parliament earlier this year, with Georgie Dansey subsequently entering Parliament to fill the Labour list vacancy. Parliamentary records confirm the change took effect in February.
His passing brings together political leaders who frequently disagree but are united in recognising a life dedicated to whānau, iwi, Rātana, Parliament and public service.
