Auckland’s biggest local government transport shake-up since the creation of the Super City takes effect on 1 October, with major responsibilities transferring from Auckland Transport to Auckland Council.
Under the new structure, Auckland Transport will focus on operating the region’s public transport network, while Auckland Council assumes responsibility for road and footpath maintenance, transport planning, public parking, cycling and walking infrastructure, and the design and delivery of transport projects.
Council Chief Executive Phil Wilson says the restructure is intended to better connect transport decisions with housing, infrastructure and Auckland’s future growth, while giving elected councillors and local boards a more direct role in decision-making.
For most Aucklanders, day-to-day services should initially look much the same. Public transport will continue operating, roads will continue to be maintained and existing contact channels will largely remain unchanged.
One visible difference will be parking, with the AT Park app becoming AC Parking and council branding appearing across parking buildings and staff uniforms.
Auckland Council will also take responsibility for requests involving road surfaces, footpaths and street lighting, while future consultations on projects such as intersection changes and bus lanes will be led by the council.
Auckland Transport Chief Executive Stacey van der Putten says the organisation can now concentrate on delivering safe and accessible public transport, growing patronage and building on major developments including the City Rail Link and expansion of Auckland’s frequent transit network.
