Food security and affordable housing need to remain at the centre of the national conversation as families continue to struggle with the cost of everyday essentials.
Dr Bonnie Robinson, Director of The Salvation Army’s Social Policy & Parliamentary Unit, catches up with Radio Waatea’s Matthew Tukaki to discuss the pressures facing households and what more needs to be done to ensure people can put food on the table and keep a secure roof over their heads.
The discussion looks at food insecurity, the demand being experienced by community organisations and the difficult choices many whānau face as housing, groceries, power and other household costs compete for increasingly stretched incomes.
Robinson and Tukaki also turn their attention to affordable housing and the importance of long-term policies that address not only the supply of homes, but whether those homes are genuinely affordable for the people who need them.
With the cost of living continuing to dominate household budgets, the kōrero puts the focus firmly on practical solutions to strengthen food security, improve access to affordable housing and prevent more whānau from falling through the cracks.
