Rātā Foundation has delivered more than $24 million into communities across Te Waipounamu and Wharekauri after recording an 8 percent investment return, demonstrating how a carefully managed community pūtea can continue growing while delivering millions of dollars in social and environmental investment every year.

The South Island’s largest community investment fund has reported a solid financial performance for the year ending 31 March 2026, with its investment portfolio reaching $717 million despite global market volatility and geopolitical uncertainty.

The result allowed Rātā Foundation to distribute more than $24 million across Canterbury, Nelson and Tasman, Marlborough and the Chatham Islands, supporting organisations working across community wellbeing, education, participation, social support and the environment.

From investment returns to community impact

Rātā Foundation operates on a model designed to protect and grow its capital while using investment returns to support communities over generations.

Since its establishment in 1988, the Foundation has invested more than $631 million through community investment programmes, while simultaneously growing the underlying trust fund by $352 million.

That long-term approach means the organisation is not simply distributing money.

It is maintaining an intergenerational asset capable of continuing to generate funding for communities well into the future.

Board Chair Josiah Tualamali’i says the Foundation’s approach is increasingly focused on working alongside communities and backing organisations closest to the challenges facing their people.

The aim is to respond to immediate needs while also investing in the capability and long-term resilience of the community sector.

Strong return despite global turbulence

Financial markets presented significant challenges during the year, with geopolitical tensions and market turbulence creating uncertainty for investors around the world.

Against that background, Rātā’s 8 percent annual return represents a strong result.

Its longer-term performance has also remained close to benchmark.

Over 10 years, the Foundation recorded an annualised return of 7.4 percent, compared with its benchmark of 7.1 percent.

Chief Executive Leighton Evans says protecting and growing the pūtea is fundamental to Rātā’s ability to continue funding communities at scale regardless of what happens in global markets.

That means balancing current community needs against the responsibility to ensure the fund remains strong for future generations.

$631 million invested since 1988

The cumulative numbers illustrate the scale of Rātā’s contribution.

More than $631 million has flowed into community investment programmes since 1988.

Those investments have supported organisations helping people to connect, learn and participate, access services and support, and care for the environment.

Rātā’s strategy increasingly focuses on partnerships capable of addressing barriers to opportunity and producing lasting improvements in community wellbeing.

That becomes particularly important as community organisations face increasing demand while dealing with their own pressures from inflation, workforce costs and uncertain funding.

More money being invested in Aotearoa

Rātā is also changing where some of its underlying capital is invested.

In recent years, the Foundation has moved more money towards direct New Zealand investments, providing an alternative to relying entirely on publicly listed financial markets.

During the latest financial year, Rātā invested alongside Direct Capital into engineering and professional services company Beca.

It also continued its investment in financial services, increasing its shareholding in SPH Wealth to support the acquisition and merger of Salt Asset Management.

The approach sees Rātā investing alongside major institutional partners in New Zealand opportunities while diversifying its portfolio beyond listed exchanges.

That creates an interesting economic cycle.

The Foundation’s capital can be invested into New Zealand businesses and assets, generate financial returns and then help fund community organisations across the regions Rātā serves.

Building a pūtea for generations

The Foundation’s financial results highlight the importance of thinking beyond a single funding year.

A community fund worth $717 million has the potential to support generations of future projects — but only if the underlying capital continues to be protected and grown.

That requires balancing two responsibilities.

Communities need investment now.

Future communities will need it too.

Rātā’s 2026 result shows those objectives do not necessarily have to compete.

After nearly four decades, the Foundation has distributed more than $631 million, grown its trust fund by $352 million, and now holds an investment portfolio valued at $717 million.

And in the latest year alone, another $24 million-plus has gone back into communities.

It is a powerful example of what long-term stewardship of capital can achieve — protecting the pūtea, growing the asset and ensuring investment returns ultimately flow back to the people and communities the fund exists to serve.
