New Zealand golfer Ryan Fox has etched his name into sporting history, claiming his first major championship after a thrilling final-round victory at The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.
Fox secured the famous Claret Jug with a nerveless birdie on the 72nd hole, finishing at 10-under-par and edging American Cameron Young by a single stroke. The dramatic finish capped one of the most exciting final rounds in recent Open history, with the lead changing hands several times over the closing holes.
Starting the day two shots behind overnight leader Sam Burns, Fox remained patient through the early stages before producing a composed finish. Despite dropping shots on the back nine, he responded with crucial birdies on the 16th and the final hole, sinking a 12-foot putt on the 18th green to seal the biggest victory of his career.
Young had posted a superb final-round 64 to set the clubhouse lead at nine-under, forcing the chasing pack to produce something special. Fox answered the challenge under immense pressure, while Burns faded after failing to capitalise on his overnight advantage.
The victory makes Fox only the second New Zealander to win The Open Championship, following Sir Bob Charles’ triumph in 1963, and just the third Kiwi to win a men’s golf major. It also marks Fox’s maiden major title after years of consistently competing on both the PGA Tour and DP World Tour.
Fox’s triumph continues a remarkable season for New Zealand sport and further cements his place among the country’s greatest golfers. Having already established himself as one of the world’s elite players, victory on one of golf’s biggest stages is the crowning achievement of a career built on perseverance, power and composure under pressure.
The win is expected to propel Fox further up the world rankings and secures his place in the history books as the 2026 Champion Golfer of the Year.
