#regional: From Te Tai Tokerau to Tāmaki: Riki Whiu Takes on Key Police Leadership Role

A respected Māori policing leader with deep connections to iwi and communities has stepped into one of New Zealand Police’s most significant partnership roles, marking a major milestone in a career spanning more than three decades.

Superintendent Roderick “Riki” Whiu has been formally welcomed as Director – Auckland Partnerships, taking responsibility for strengthening Police relationships across Tāmaki Makaurau with iwi, community organisations, local government and other key agencies.

Originally from Te Tai Tokerau, Whiu has built a reputation as a collaborative leader who has worked across frontline policing, investigations and district leadership. Most recently he served as Northland District Commander, where he focused on building strong partnerships with Māori, community leaders and local organisations to improve public safety and trust in policing.

His new role is regarded as one of the most influential partnership positions within New Zealand Police, reflecting the scale and diversity of Auckland and the importance of working closely with communities to address crime prevention, community wellbeing and public confidence.

The appointment also highlights the growing presence of Māori leaders in senior policing positions, bringing cultural understanding and strong community relationships into strategic decision-making at the highest levels.

Police say the Director – Auckland Partnerships position is central to ensuring the organisation works alongside the people, agencies and communities that help shape New Zealand’s largest city, with collaboration seen as a cornerstone of effective policing.

As Whiu begins his new challenge, his appointment is being recognised as an important step for both Police and the communities they serve, reinforcing the value of partnership, trust and engagement across Tāmaki Makaurau.
