A fresh new Māori television series is about to hit the screens, blending humour, culture and horsemanship as some of Aotearoa’s best-known Māori personalities trade city life for the saddle.

GET YOUR LEG OVER premieres on Wednesday 8 July at 7.00pm on Whakaata Māori and MĀORI+, taking viewers on a light-hearted journey of identity, reconnecting with hau kāinga and stepping well outside their comfort zones.

Produced by Kapu Tī Productions, the eight-part series is hosted by Lizzie Rangihuna (Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Tūwharetoa), who guides a different Māori celebrity through the challenges of learning to ride horses while reconnecting with culture, whenua and themselves.

Executive Producer Michelle Lee says the series follows a classic fish-out-of-water format, with each guest arriving as a complete beginner before taking on the physical and emotional challenges of horsemanship.

From social media stars and musicians to elite athletes and performers, each episode explores what happens when confidence in one field doesn’t necessarily translate to another.

The series arrives as horse culture experiences renewed popularity across Aotearoa, particularly within Māori communities where hōiho have long held cultural, historical and practical significance.

Rather than focusing solely on riding, GET YOUR LEG OVER explores trust, resilience, whakawhanaungatanga and personal growth, with plenty of laughs along the way.

Opening the series is TikTok cooking sensation Pairama Wright (Ngāi Tahu, Ngā Ruahine), whose online following of more than half a million people has made him one of Aotearoa’s most recognisable digital creators. This time, however, the kitchen is replaced by the paddock as he learns whether confidence can carry him into the saddle.

Future episodes feature an impressive line-up of Māori talent, including singer-songwriter Māhinarangi Lawrence, rugby-playing siblings Shiray and Gillies Kākā, content creator Rezin Barber, powerlifting champion Montel Tivoli, entrepreneur Harlem-Cruz Ihaia, kapa haka leader Pere Wihongi, and internationally acclaimed Māori metal band Alien Weaponry.

Each guest returns to familiar surroundings while confronting an unfamiliar challenge, discovering that working with horses requires patience, communication, humility and mutual respect.

The series continues Kapu Tī Productions’ long-standing commitment to showcasing Māori stories through the unique relationship between people and horses. Over the past 15 years the production company has created successful programmes including Native Ride, Hōiho and Hōiho – Riding On, helping bring Māori equestrian culture to national audiences.

With its mix of comedy, culture and authentic storytelling, GET YOUR LEG OVER celebrates the enduring connection between Māori and hōiho while reminding viewers that some of life’s greatest lessons begin by stepping beyond familiar ground.

The new series premieres on Wednesday 8 July on Whakaata Māori and will also be available to stream on MĀORI+.
