The future of Pacific representation in Super Rugby Pacific has suffered a significant setback, with confirmation that Moana Pasifika will not be part of the competition from 2027.
New Zealand Rugby has officially ended efforts to secure a new ownership group for the franchise after several interested parties failed to meet the financial and commercial requirements needed to keep the team operating. The decision means Super Rugby Pacific will revert to a 10-team competition from 2027.
The announcement is expected to have a major impact across Samoa, Tonga and Pacific communities throughout Aotearoa, where Moana Pasifika has become a symbol of Pacific pride and a pathway for emerging rugby talent since joining the competition in 2022.
Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters expressed disappointment at the outcome, noting efforts had been made alongside Pacific partners to explore options for keeping the franchise alive. The Government had hoped additional time would allow a rescue package to be finalised, but New Zealand Rugby opted to proceed with its decision.
Moana Pasifika was established to create professional rugby opportunities for Pacific players and strengthen connections between elite rugby and Pacific communities. During its time in Super Rugby, the franchise provided a platform for some of the region’s most exciting talent while helping raise the profile of Pacific rugby on the international stage.
New Zealand Rugby says the financial realities facing the franchise ultimately proved insurmountable, with no proposal able to demonstrate the long-term sustainability required to secure the licence. Despite the setback, rugby administrators have indicated the door remains open for a future Pacific-based team should a viable model emerge.
For many Pacific supporters, the loss of Moana Pasifika represents more than the end of a rugby team. It marks the loss of a powerful symbol of identity, aspiration and opportunity for young Pacific athletes who saw the franchise as a pathway to the professional game.
