People in Whangārei and the Far North who rely on the Total Mobility scheme are being urged to prepare for changes coming into effect next month as the Government rolls out a nationwide overhaul of the programme.
From July 1, 2026, adjustments to subsidies and fare caps will alter the cost of using the service for many registered users across Northland.
The changes are part of a Government initiative aimed at improving the long-term sustainability of the Total Mobility scheme, which provides subsidised transport for people with disabilities and mobility challenges.
Under the new arrangements, the national subsidy rate will decrease from 75 percent to 65 percent. While most journeys are expected to see only a modest increase in cost, longer trips could become significantly more expensive for some users.
Despite the changes to fares and subsidies, Northland Regional Council says there will be no changes to how people access the service. Existing booking processes, Total Mobility cards and participating taxi operators will all remain the same.
All registered Total Mobility users in Whangārei and the Far North are being contacted directly by letter or email with information outlining how the changes may affect them.
Northland Regional Council Regional Transport Committee Chair Joe Carr says officials understand the changes may be concerning for people who depend on the service for essential travel.
He says many users rely on Total Mobility to attend medical appointments, access shops, maintain social connections and participate in community life, making affordable transport an important issue for many whānau.
Carr is encouraging clients, caregivers and family members to carefully review the information provided and seek assistance if they have questions about the new arrangements.
The council says its transport team is available to help people understand the changes and ensure they continue to access services without disruption.
Transport advocates have previously highlighted the importance of accessible and affordable mobility options, particularly in rural regions where public transport alternatives can be limited.
Anyone seeking further information about the changes can contact the Northland Regional Council Transport Team on 0800 002 004.
